Natural resources such as gold and tin and natural resources such as timber have historically played an important role in the development of the region as they provided the impetus for the establishment of Cairns Harbour. A large number of American troops were stationed in the region during those years, but there is now little physical evidence of those years of unrest. The location of Trinity Bay was chosen as suitable for the establishment of both a shipping center and a village serving the Far North, and the success of this port greatly influenced the development of specific agricultural activities in the region. Timber was one of the earliest industries in Far North Queensland, timber being felled in the early 1870s, before Cairns itself was established. The development of the Cairns region was due to the discovery of rich minerals such as gold and tin, but when these were exhausted, agriculture, mainly sugar cultivation, became the basis of the economy of that Queensland region. Why is this important? The Cairns area is historically significant due to its natural landforms, which greatly influenced the choice of site and the development of the city of Cairns and the surrounding hinterland. The city of Cairns was originally built on a narrow, sandy , strip of land and the first town plan of 1877 used a grid pattern to create residential blocks. These communities have made a lasting contribution to Cairns, once home to Queensland's second largest Chinatown. airns was established in 1876 to serve the gold mines of Far North Queensland, providing port number with freight to and from the region. As the region became more accessible, Cairns' inland natural landscape attracted attention as an Area of Natural Beauty.
