 courses in Cairns
Timber was one of the earliest industries in Far North Queensland, timber being felled in the early 1870s, before Cairns itself was established. The city of Cairns was originally built on a narrow, sandy , strip of land and the first town plan of 1877 used a grid pattern to create residential blocks. The development of the Cairns region was due to the discovery of rich minerals such as gold and tin, but when these were exhausted, agriculture, mainly sugar cultivation, became the basis of the economy of that Queensland region. The Cairns area has historical and social significance for the influx of many different types of migrants who settled in the area largely due to the original mineral resources and later industrial development. The development of that city was supported by the state, which built the Babinda Hotel and then helped the compromise with the Babinda Township Law in an attempt to stabilize an otherwise mobile population. The timber industry has changed significantly since the 1988 World Heritage List of Queensland Wet Tropics, which stretches along the coast from Townsville to Cooktown, and most of Far North Queensland's remaining sawmills now mill plantation timber. The timber industry was later important in the early economy of the Cairns area shortly after settlement and continued as an important industry for many years into the 20th century. Tourism has given Cairns further economic growth and stability. Cairns is located on a narrow coastal plain surrounded mostly by mountain ranges. Both the Running Line, originally built to transport mining products and timber to Cairns Harbour, and the Brisbane to Cairns link later provided a boost to the tourism industry in the Cairns area.
