Cairns is located on a narrow coastal plain surrounded mostly by mountain ranges. Why is this important? The Cairns area is historically significant due to its natural landforms, which greatly influenced the choice of site and the development of the city of Cairns and the surrounding hinterland. The city of Cairns was originally built on a narrow, sandy , strip of land and the first town plan of 1877 used a grid pattern to create residential blocks. Tourism has given Cairns further economic growth and stability. On the other hand, the city of Babinda developed in an unplanned way along the tramway built in and then along the national highway perpendicular to the tramway. The climatic conditions in the Cairns area were found to be ideal for growing sugar cane at degrees and this led to the establishment of the sugar industry. This in turn greatly affected the population of the Cairns area - initially Melanesian and Chinese labor moved in and southern Europeans, especially Italians, later moved into industry. The development of the Cairns region was due to the discovery of rich minerals such as gold and tin, but when these were exhausted, agriculture, mainly sugar cultivation, became the basis of the economy of that Queensland region. Buildings and areas in and around Cairns were used for various military purposes and the proximity of the conflict caused the evacuation of many local residents to the south. Railway provision played an important role in the development of the region, including the heavy construction of the Running Line in 1886 and the linking of the railway north and south of in 192 , which later connected Cairns to Brisbane.
