airns was established in 1876 to serve the gold mines of Far North Queensland, providing port number with freight to and from the region. This in turn greatly affected the population of the Cairns area - initially Melanesian and Chinese labor moved in and southern Europeans, especially Italians, later moved into industry. The climatic conditions in the Cairns area were found to be ideal for growing sugar cane at degrees and this led to the establishment of the sugar industry. Along with the characteristic tropical climate, the natural soil also played an important role in the development of the important industries of the Cairns region, both sugar and tourism. Both the Running Line, originally built to transport mining products and timber to Cairns Harbour, and the Brisbane to Cairns link later provided a boost to the tourism industry in the Cairns area. Cairns is located on a narrow coastal plain surrounded mostly by mountain ranges. The location of Trinity Bay was chosen as suitable for the establishment of both a shipping center and a village serving the Far North, and the success of this port greatly influenced the development of specific agricultural activities in the region. Railway provision played an important role in the development of the region, including the heavy construction of the Running Line in 1886 and the linking of the railway north and south of in 192 , which later connected Cairns to Brisbane. The second largest provincial town in District , is Gordonvale, which was a fully planned colonial administration of , before settlement. Timber was one of the earliest industries in Far North Queensland, timber being felled in the early 1870s, before Cairns itself was established.
