heritage ALLIANCE Job 2009-20 Thematic History of Cairns vi The Second World War significantly changed activities in and around Cairns, especially after the fall of Singapore in 19 2 when it became an important base. The Cairns area has historical and social significance for the influx of many different types of migrants who settled in the area largely due to the original mineral resources and later industrial development. The most successful and dominant of them is the sugar industry, which had a very important impact on the development of the region, the attractiveness of the region and the changed aspect of the landscape. On the other hand, the city of Babinda developed in an unplanned way along the tramway built in and then along the national highway perpendicular to the tramway. Why is this important? The Cairns area is historically significant due to its natural landforms, which greatly influenced the choice of site and the development of the city of Cairns and the surrounding hinterland. Encouraged by the Queensland Government, tourists were attracted to the area, especially in the 20th century, and this led to the development of another very influential industry in Cairns. The development of the Cairns region was due to the discovery of rich minerals such as gold and tin, but when these were exhausted, agriculture, mainly sugar cultivation, became the basis of the economy of that Queensland region. The location of Trinity Bay was chosen as suitable for the establishment of both a shipping center and a village serving the Far North, and the success of this port greatly influenced the development of specific agricultural activities in the region. The second largest provincial town in District , is Gordonvale, which was a fully planned colonial administration of , before settlement. Another very important industry in the region is tourism which has led to the development of transport and commercial infrastructure throughout the study area .
